Today's youth might not think of Aerosmith as being a particularly "hard rock" band, but when the group began their illustrious career some 38 years ago that's exactly what they were. The band has been referred to as the "Bad Boys from Boston" and "America's Greatest Rock and Roll band." While some people may argue the last title, there is simply no denying the success that this group has enjoyed throughout their long run. They are currently the best-selling American hard rock band of all time. To date they have sold 150 million records across the globe, with 66.6 million of those sales coming here in the United States.
The success of Aerosmith can't be summed up just by the number of albums that they have sold. The band also has had 21 Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 charts; they also have 4 Grammy awards to their credit. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and Rolling Stone magazine hailed them among the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" at spot number 57.
Aerosmith has gained their tremendous success in part based on their unique sound and approach to rock music which has, in turn, inspired a number of other rock musicians in the decades since Aerosmith's creation. The band features a blues-based rock sound, but they aren't afraid to throw in a little nod toward pop music, R&B, heavy metal, and even glam music. It's no wonder that this talented band holds the title for most gold and multi-platinum albums by an American group.
